Scouting for Food - Part I

Today was the door hanger day. This is our sixth year of Scouting for Food, but for the first time we know how many houses are in the area that we responsible to cover. There are just over 800 homes. Thank you scouts for turning out to walk our neighborhood. Thank you also to the parents and siblings that helped out. "Way to Go" to all of you! This was just Part I. The next part is the actual food pick up next Saturday. Here are a couple pictures of our scouts before and after.

Food Bank Open House for Scouts

We are planning on attending the Food Bank Open House for Scouts.  This is a terrific event that was attended by a few scouts from Pack 380 last year.  Check out this link to see a slide show from the event last year.

What:  Food Bank Open House for Scouts

When: October 20 (Saturday) from 230pm to 4pm

Where: Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano at 4010 Nelson Avenue, Concord

Go see how the Food Bank works and gear up for Scouting for Food!

At this event, you will get a behind the scene look at the Food Bank.  The day will include a tour, educational and craft activities, and an opportunity to experience being a Food Bank volunteer be sorting and boxing produce.  I think last year we were able to sort plums.  All age levels are welcome to participate.

Community service is an important part of being a Cub Scout.  Scouts will learn how their "Scouting for Food" donations help the Food Bank fight hunger in their communities.  The Food Bank is requesting that each Scout bring a can of tune to kick-off this year's food drive to this event.

Pack 380 Class B Shirt Order Form

At the September 13, 2012 Pack meeting, our scouts voted on the design for our Pack T-shirt.  Below is the order form for the T-shirts.  We are asking that all order forms be submitted to us at the Pack meeting this week on October 11 so that our order can be placed.

The T-shirt is navy blue and has a really cool wolf design in a grayish/white color.  The wolf design is perfect given Woodside Elementary's mascot.

The pack will pay for the cost one T-shirt for each scout.  Any additional shirts beyond this will be $12 for each shirt.

Tilden Park Hike - October 21

We are pushing out our Pack hike at Tilden Park to October 21 and making the start of the hike to be in the afternoon.  The plan is for families to carpool or to meet at the park.  Here are the details:

Please contact your den leaders or let us know at the Pack meeting this week if you plan on attending.  The hike will start at the Little Farm so you will probably have a chance to check out the farm animals. If you want to feed the animals, please bring lettuce and/or celery.  These are the only foods that can be fed to the animals by the public.

For the hike, follow the guidance provided below.  It's usually cooler in the Tilden Park hills so a jacket or sweat shirt is recommended.  Definitely bring a water bottle and a light snack is advisable since this is an after lunch hike.

Attending this pack event, will allow scouts who have not done so already to earn their Hiking belt loop.  Here are the details for this belt loop:

Webelo Graduation Ceremony

Congrats to our five second-year Webelos on their graduation to Boy Scouting!

We celebrated the occasion at our April Pack meeting with the presentation of Arrow of Light awards to four of the scouts.  This award is the only one that goes with the scouts from cub scouting to boy scouting. On hand to present the award were boy scouts with the Order of the Arrow.

For the graduation ceremony, we had scouts from Troops 370 and 484 to welcome the five new boy scouts to their troops.  We had two scouts joining Troop 370 and the other three joining Troop 484.  After the ceremonies, our new boy scouts led the younger scouts in a game.  The evening wrapped up with juice and cake.

We look forward to our younger scouts one day being able to have this experience as they move forward.  Here's a short video summary of the ceremonies.

April 2012 Pack Meeting

The focus of this meeting is the bridging ceremony for our second year Webelos who are leaving Pack 380 to move onto become Boy Scouts.  Three of the five boys have been cub scouts with Pack 380 starting as Tiger Cubs!

This is a big day for our five webelos and hopefully one day all of the other current Pack 380 scouts will also be able to participate in their own bridging ceremonies too.  The bridging ceremony marks the "bridging over" of our second year webelos from cub scout to boy scout.  There will actually be a ceremonial bridge at the meeting and members from the two troops that our boys are moving onto at the meeting to accept the boys into their troops.  We have two boys moving onto Troop 370 and three boys moving onto Troop 484.

After the ceremonies, the outgoing webelos will help lead the pack in games and we'll also have cake and refreshments for all to celebrate this important milestone.

In order to help accommodate the two boy scout troops that will join our meeting for the bridging ceremonies, we are moving the start time of the meeting to 630pm just for this one month. The following is the agenda for the meeting:

2012 Pinewood Derby

A great turnout was on hand for the 2012 Pinewood Derby races for Pack 380. With family and friends on hand, all the scouts were able to show off the results their hours of shaping, sanding, polishing, painting and fine-tuning of their pinewood derby cars.

There were cars of all shapes and sizes. Some had to undergo last-minute adjustments to qualify for the races. In the end, Ryan's pick-up truck with what looked like a rocket engine took first place, second place went to another Wolf Cub Owen and his Formula 1 race car, and third place to Webelo David and his green machine.

The "coolest design" award based on a vote of his peers, the scouts, Tiger Cub Zachary won with his Humvee design. The "Turtle Race" was won by Tiger Cub Richard in a squeaker over Bear Cub Kevin.

We had one special award called the "Spirit of Scouting," with its own trophy made by Cubmaster Llata. This award went to Wolf Cub Erik who ran home on the night of the weigh-in to make changes to the car so that it would fit on the tracks, not giving up and making it back just in time to qualify his car for the races. A special nod also should go out to Antonio and his shark as they too had to make adjustments at the weigh-in to reduce weight.

The night also included Unit Commissioner Bernie Zurlo awarding Pack 380 with its rechartering.

Special thanks go to Cubmaster Chris and Den Leader James for helping all the scouts that they did with their cars. Also, the same thanks go out to all of the families who worked on their cars with their boys. Thanks to the pit crew also that included Tracy and Kimm as the official starters, Girl Scouts Naomi and Bonnie as the car retrievers and Scout David as the computer operator for the first time. Thanks to Alicia for the yummy snacks and picking up the pizza! And finally let's not forget Gene Dodge of Troop 364 who lent us the track for this year's race.

This year's race over so time to start planning for next year. We're thinking about have an open class race open to all non-scouts too!

2012 Blue & Gold Dinner

This is a slideshow of photos and videos from the Blue & Gold dinner and show.  The Blue & Gold Dinner is a birthday celebration of the Scouting.  Pack 380 has traditionally held its dinner in February and has in recent years included entertainment.  After all, isn't scouting all about fun?  This year our entertainment was provided by Magician Gerald Joseph making return visit to our annual dinner.

Scouting's history goes back to the turn of the 20th century to a British Army officer, Mr. Baden-Powell.  He organized and led patrols of English boys that played games, went on hikes, and learned stalking and pioneering.  In 1908, he published his book Scouting for Boys and scouting began to grow.  At about the same time, a similar concept of scouting was taking place in America amongst some boys groups.  However, Boys Scouts as we know it today did not come about until an American businessman and publisher named william D. Boyce got lost in the fog during a business trip in England.  A young aided Boyce to his destination through the fog.  This boy refused the tip Boyce offered him and courteously explained that he was a scout and could not accept payment for a good turn.  Intrigued, the publisher questioned the boy about scouting and later visited Baden-Powell as well.  Upon his return to America Boyce incorporated the Boys Scouts of America on February 8, 1910.  The Cub Scouts was organized 20 years later in 1930.

If you have photos that you want to share and have added to this slideshow, please go check out this Picasa album for the photos and videos that are in this slideshow.  Enjoy the slideshow!
